Reviews
American painter Thomas Cole (1801-1848) is generally recognized as the founder of the Hudson River School, a United States art movement during the mid 19th century. His genius, as well as the genius of the other members of the Hudson River School, are expressed on canvasses that are usually very large and that depict spectacular landscapes and endless wilderness scenes where the occasional human figures are tiny and almost insignificant. The nature themes are very realistic and represented in great detail. The lighting - an orange to light-brown color - is romantic. Many of the paintings depict sunsets.Needless to say, in this particular Kindle application, the majority of the paintings are of landscapes, while the few very small human figures confirm the overwhelming grandeur of nature when compared to the size of men and women. The rare larger and more elaborate figures are of special individuals. One is a portrait of the artist himself. A few are of angels, for example, “Angels Ministering to Christ in the Wilderness“.There are also fictional/mythological characters and places. Some of these are: “Prometheus Bound”, and a few sets of paintings, such as those of “The Course of the Empire” series, “The Garden of Eden” series, “The Voyage of Life” series. Many of the landscape locations are in the Eastern United States. There are also views of Rome, Florence, Tivoli (outside Rome), Mount Etna/Taormina (in the island of Sicily) and of the Italian countryside. The Italian scenes are typically romantic, with frequent ruins from the distant past.Kindle books by Thomas Cole, by several other members of the Hudson River School, and by other world renown and very prominent artists - many compiled by Jacek Michalak - are a great value for the money. They may not include much written text. Occasionally even the titles are missing. But the reproductions are great and offer to the serious art lover the advantage of the use of various size magnifications of the same painting.
